5.HPL and the environment
It is generally possible to recondition and reuse HPL by applying another coating, and this is primarily done in the private sector. HPL elements that are no longer used are also used as raw material for chipboard.
At the end of their life cycle, HPL products are largely recycled for energy, e.g., in combined heat and power plants for district heating and electricity generation. This is becoming increasingly important in view of dwindling natural resources. In addition, the existing waste disposal network can be used. Energy recovery thus contributes to reducing the amount of fossil fuels needed for energy production – a plus for climate protection.
